The Whirling Dervish ceremony — known as Sema — is one of Turkey’s most profound and beautiful spiritual traditions. Recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, this meditation in motion represents the mystical journey of the human soul toward union with the divine. Watching it performed in Cappadocia’s ancient cave caravanserai is an experience that stays with you forever.
About the Ceremony
The Sema is the central ritual of the Mevlevi Order, founded in 13th-century Konya by the followers of Jalal ad-Din Rumi. During the ceremony, the dervishes dress in white robes representing shrouds, with tall felt hats representing tombstones. As they whirl, arms extended, right palm facing up to receive divine blessing and left palm facing down to share it with earth, they enter a state of active meditation.
